There are few things in life more satisfying than having a lush green lawn, which is why sod has become a great option for homeowners who want real results, fast!
But once the sod is rolled out, many homeowners wonder: what now? That is where a clear new sod care timeline comes in handy!
Keep reading as we walk you through the first six weeks after your new sod goes down, sharing easy-to-follow tips, real-world advice, and a new timeline that makes nurturing your lawn simple.
Week 1: Installation
During the first week, you’ll want to keep your sod consistently moist by watering 3X per day– but avoid standing water. Every time you gently shower your lawn, you are helping with root establishment. It’s also important to stay off your lawn for a while to avoid compacting the soil or disturbing the delicate roots– this includes keeping your pets off the lawn too.
Week 2: Settling In
In this part of your new sod care timeline it is recommended to keep watering three times a day (up to day 13), even during hot weather to prevent heat stress and keep those blades vibrant and green. Avoid mowing at this point! Your sod is still delicate and needs time to anchor itself.
Week 3: First Mow
Week three of the new sod care timeline is when you can slow down on watering, sticking to a 3X per week schedule. Around this time, you may be able to plan your first mow–but take it slow. Raise your mower blade a notch higher than the recommended height and bag the clippings. A few days later, lower the blade to the ideal height and bag again.
Week 4: Weed Watch
Nobody wants to deal with weeds, and when they pop up it can be discouraging– but don’t panic! Some weeds are totally normal and don’t stand a chance if you handle them right. While you might be tempted to turn to pre-emergent herbicides, during week four of the new sod care timeline that’s the last thing you should do.
If you’re dealing with weeds, roll up your sleeves and hand-pull any stragglers. Note that you should keep up with water 2-3 times per week at this point.
Week 5: Rooting and Recovery
By week five of the new sod car timeline, your sod should be well on its way to rooting deeply! Keep up on watering 2-3 times per week and make sure the soil stays moist without pooling. If insects appear, identify them before taking any action. Not all bugs are harmful!
Week 6: Establishment Phase
At the six-week mark of the sod, your lawn is starting to feel like home. The roots are more firmly established, and the sod is greener, fuller, and ready to handle light foot traffic. This is a great time to check your fertilization schedule based on your grass type, so your lawn continues to thrive!
